Canadian studies examines Canada's past and present from a political, economic, social and cultural standpoint. The program takes an interdisciplinary approach, allowing students to study Canadian themes from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives and to synthesize these perspectives in specific Canadian studies courses.
Canadian studies offers a multi-dimensional learning experience. For example: courses in sociology examine ethnicity, poverty and inequality. Courses in history examine Canada's colonial past, making sense of twentieth century Québec nationalism, multiculturalism and regionalism. Labour courses cover Canada's unique approach to industrial relations and worker rights.
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of Canada from a national and international context through topics including language, geography, culture and history.
Canadian Studies is a valuable asset to a variety of exciting careers including:
Municipal, Provincial or Federal Government
Communications/Business
Immigration
Community Development
Politics
Canadian Studies can also prepare students to pursue a degree in Education or Law or graduate studies in areas such as History, City/Urban Planning or Canadian Studies.
